What Do You Want?

What Do You Want?

We spend a lot of time doing things that we really don’t want to do, then we complain about doing them. Well, what is it you really want to do? There are people who work their entire lives at a job they don’t like, maybe even hate, stay with the same person they don’t like, wasting their lives away. Usually the reason for this is they never seriously asked themselves, “What do you want?”

Going through life settling for what you get isn’t living. It’s just marking time until you die. Listening to people who say, “Why do you think you should be able to do what you want, no one else can.” If we listen to them then that is our fault, because that isn’t true. We should get what we want. We should be happy with our lives. Sometimes we must do things we don’t want to do, but our lives certainly shouldn’t be doing one thing after another that we don’t want to do, making ourselves more and more miserable day after day.

For some reason society seems to have taken control of our lives. Although it is true that society has an important place that keeps order and protects us, but the control of our lives is something that we must take and keep if we are to enjoy our time here on this planet.

We should sit down with pencil and paper and ask ourselves the tough question. There is only one. “What do we want?” Is it a loving significant other, and family, a house, money, a nice car, to travel? What? If we don’t know how can we ever put ourselves on the path to getting it? I once read a book that’s title covers this perfectly. If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, You’ll Probably End Up Somewhere Else. How would you like to be sitting in a rocking chair at the end of your life, going over all the things you didn’t do, instead of smiling about all the things you did do? Wouldn’t you rather think about all the fun you had. Sure, you made some mistakes, but if the truth be told, some of those mistakes turn out pretty good too.

So, take your list and starting today, get out and do those things that you always wanted to do. It’s not a “bucket” list. It’s the list that you always had, but someone told you that you couldn’t do them and you believed them…silly you. Come on let's get started. Remember this if you don’t remember anything else: “It’s never to late until the day after you die…and we're not really sure about that.”
